Downward Facing Dog - Adho Mukha Svanasana

I had to start with down dog right?! From this week on, the poses will not be in any kind of order at all, but I definitely wanted to start  with this fundamental posture. I have a lot of thoughts on down dog. While I know it's taught in nearly every beginners class, I do not think it is a simple pose. In fact, I consider it one of the hardest poses to teach and also one of the most difficult to know if you're in correct alignment.2014-01-04 16.27.05

Most common student comment on down dog?

"I never feel like I'm doing it right"

SO TRUE. There are many elements to this posture and I could explain it, but it's been done by many people who are much more articulate. Here's a great video from Ekhart Yoga:

Try down dog...and don't worry if you're doing it "right" or "wrong." It basically comes down to breathing and getting a long spine.
