summer halfway point -- a listical of sorts

Okay. Let's just slow all this down. It's Monday morning and I got back from Asheville last night, enjoyed carry-out from the St. Joe picnic (NOODLES), washed a week's worth of sweaty yoga clothes (BLECH), and crashed.

Can we just stop and observe some things?

1. THIS

Being in Asheville for the verdict was pretty epic. Especially given that I was smack dab in the middle of a Bhakti Vinyasa training...bhakti means love and to complete the theme, I listened to Aziz Ansari's book, Modern Romance, on the way down. So funny and surprisingly moving.

2. I've completed a few books, but still shy of my goal. No worries, I'm going to push on!

3. Can't wait to listen to this podcast today. One of my favorites of the year.

4. A week from today I start teaching my class at Inner Spring Yoga in New Albany! So excited! More details to come...

5. Kacey Musgraves new album. All that needs to be said.

6. I'm on episode ten of OITNB season three. Still in shock it's taken me this long to watch the season...I am unsure about it...

7. The Grove Park Inn Spa is still insanely wonderful. Worth it 100%.

8. and finally...I'm now on Snapchat?! UUUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHH

That's the noise I make when I talk about Snapchat. My real thoughts = that's for the "kids these days." After seeing too many cool people get on, I've decided to try it.

Add me at: graylinsporter

I have no idea how to work it and probably won't be interested in finding out. Sounds awesome doesn't it?! Someone HELP ME!

link love

Almost every blog I read has a weekly link round up post. I always love them and I've run into several things lately that I would love to share as well.

Here are some fun reads and things for this snowy afternoon.

A piece on never wanting to be pregnant. Thank you for this Jessica Murnane. I find this take on motherhood and adoption to be RE-FRESH-ING.

Aziz. He's basically the best thing ever. So excited to watch his new special tomorrow night on Netflix.

I really enjoyed the first episode of the new Vulture TV podcast. Even if they said multiple good things about HBO's Girls. This season is awful right?!

One of my favorite people in the world was on Fresh Air today.

I've got these in a shopping bag on Prana, but am still on the fence. What do you think!? I think they might be really ugly.

Obsessed with this song.

What else? Oh yeah, this. Quite possibly my favorite collection of GIFs ever.

content overload

tumblr_ltre1rX1vw1r4j1uqo1_500

Way too much to read, listen, see, do, eat, drink, watch, write, and make. I want to do it all and every day I just find out about more stuff!

I will be honest that TV has taken a bit of a backseat lately. We don't have any shows going right now. Although we did start Boardwalk Empire. Egads, that thing is about MEN being MEN and being POWERFUL. Which I'm not so sure I need to see another show like that, but it's very well done so....

I've been reading at night instead of watching stuff and am trying to read during my lunch at work as well. It's going okay! Here's a master list of the things I'm trying to consume this week...maybe just this afternoon!?

An hour long video interview with Ashtangi Laruga Glaser. She is amazing. I can't wait to watch this.

I'm currently reading two incredible page turners.  I was making fabulous prgress on the second book in the Elena Ferrante trilogy when I listened to this episode of Books on the Nightstand. I am now obsessively reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. I'm not sure how great a book it is (quality wise), but it's definitely entertaining...the Gone Girl of 2015 for sure.

My podcast feed is out of control. Trying to listen through it all, but getting bogged down. Especially with the slew of new albums being released right now too!

Oh, and let us not forget, the internet. There is my Feedly list of blogs, which is downright gigantic. The flood of daily news (thank god for NYT Now), op-eds, long reads, twitterings, and vlogs. Yep, I said vlogs. Perhaps my secret obsession with YouTube channels should be saved for another post entirely...

And on top of it all, today is Thursday and Thursday is when the GOOP newsletter arrives in my inbox, ready and waiting for ridicule!

It's all too much...but in a good way I'm pretty sure.

life is better with...npr all songs considered's mid-year show

Print I love this show every year...NPR's All Songs Considered Best Music of the Year, So Far. I always hear great music that's new to me and can't help but feel validated if they mention something I've already been listening to. Ha!

Here's a link to this year's show, published today.

After listening, I'm now listening to this song on repeat:

life is better with...this interview

I already loved Neil Gaiman. I love his books, his speeches, everything. Seriously, he's just perfect. I'm reading aloud his latest silly children's book, Fortunately, The Milk to fourth graders right now and they are loving it.

So naturally I was thrilled to wake up this morning, check my podcast feeds, and see that he was on On Point yesterday. Listened to this hour of radio while getting ready for work ...fantastic. What a great way to start my day!

Here's a link to the interview...I highly recommend: http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/11/25/neil-gaiman-sandman-overture

Happy Friday y'all!

It's Friday! I've been off all week and I have all next off as well, but Friday is still Friday!

Fresh Air with Terry Gross has been really great lately...thought I'd share some of my favorite shows of late:

How Our Stone Age Bodies Struggle to Stay Healthy in Modern Times Breaking Bad Writers: This is It, There's No More Tom Hanks is Captain Phillips in High Seas Hostage Drama From Child Actor to Artist: Radcliffe Reflects on Post-Potter Life Big Pharma and Meth Cooks Agree: Keep Cold Meds Over the Counter

life is better with...this new podcast

I recently found a great new podcast. Three  intelligent ladies talking TV?!?! YES PLEASE! Fair warning...if you do not watch cable/prestige tv, this is probably not in your wheelhouse. But I do and I LOVE it!

These ladies are fantastic. I discovered it via one of my favorite twitter friends,  Britt Julious. She and two others, Alison Cuddy and Leah Pickett have great discussions regarding current television. However, what I especially like about this podcast is that the given opinions are fully fleshed out with attention to broader cultural, literary, and cinematic impact. Unlike some pop culture podcasts I listen to...that is all...

Anyways, here's the link, their podcast Changing Channels  is part of WBEZ Chicago. Listen to it.

Got a new phone with much better camera...however, it's not possible to turn off the incredibly loud shutter sound?! I have about twenty more of these I was taking while lying in bed trying to figure it out...boo IMG_20130609_122037

Haven't made these potatoes in forever...oh man, so good and so easy. 20130609_172451

Of course these posts are never complete without at least one dog photo IMG_20130609_162907

This week's photos are all thanks to my new phone. I'll be back to the Pentax next week. Trying to get back into podcast listening this morning. Listening to Mara Wilson on Talk of the Nation right now...child stars are crazy! I'll be honest, NPR has been a bit of a drag lately...

life is better (I guess) with these podcasts...

IMGP8139 Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, The Diane Rehm Show, On Point, Q, Radiolab, Filmspotting, Two Gomers Run for Their Lives, Nerdist, Intelligence Squared and more.

Okay. So those are some podcasts that I truly enjoy almost every day. I learn a lot and I feel mentally stimulated.  And then there are these:

The Joy the Baker podcast

NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour

Slate Culture Gabfest

Double X Gabfest

I don't like to say that I "hate-listen" to these shows, but I'm afraid it's kind of true. Every week I find myself simultaneously annoyed and amused. They almost always incite a rant that begins with something "OMG I can't believe these people!?!?!?!" So....WHY do I keep listening? I have lots of interest in the topics,, yet I often disagree so strongly with the hosts' opinions that I find myself wanting to pull my hair out. It's like being at a dinner party with no ability to interject and voice one's opinion!

I mean, c'mon...an endorsement of banana pudding: "the ultimate summer dessert concoction of bananas, pudding, Nilla wafers, and whipped cream" or an in-depth analysis of Nicki Minaj's judging technique on America Idol?!

However, it might not be so bad to listen to the viewpoints that differ from your own...I suppose it's good for me...

Do you "hate-listen" to podcasts/talk radio?!? Am I the only one?!

Happy Friday Y'all! November 30, 2012

Highlights of my week:

Liz and Dick, Christmas trees, portabello mushroom ravioli, Sassy Fox, not feeling sick anymore, and reading this book aloud at work.

Also some great podcast listens this week...which reminded me of the RIDICULOUS mistake I made of leaving this lady off of my list of lady role models:

WHAT IS MY PROBLEM?!?! Dolly is one of my all-time favorite ladies..I love love love love her. Sorry Dolly...

"After Decades of Dreaming, Dolly says 'Dream More'" Talk of the Nation - November 27, 2012

Happy Friday Y'all!

Happy Friday! Thank god, again. It's been a rough week filled with no voice and yet another flare up of the sinus infection that will never die. Booooooo

NPR has got its groove back...except for all the Petraeus related coverage, but hey, I'll take what I can get!

"Deb Perelman: 'The Smitten Kitchen' The Diane Rehm Show - Monday, November 12, 2012 I've been reading Smitten Kitchen FOREVER. Love it--probably my favorite food blog. Hands down.

"Kushner's 'Lincoln' Is Strange, but also Savvy" Fresh Air -- Thursday, November 15, 2012 How am I just now finding out that Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay for Lincoln?! Crazy! Yeah, and I'm still not going.

"A Young Reporter Chronicles her Descent into Madness" Fresh Air -- Wednesday, November 14, 2012 OMG OMG Literally one of the craziest interviews I've ever heard. SO fascinating.

DoubleX Gabfest: the PetWell Edition Slate -- Thursday, November 15, 2012

"Heavy Rotation: 5 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing" NPR Music - November 16, 2012

So ready for the weekend--hope you have a good one!
